7. Ongoing Maintenance
-
Mulching
-
Top up mulch at least once a year, especially in spring. Keep mulch 5–10 cm away from the trunk to prevent rot and pest issues.
-
-
We recommend using organic mulch (e.g., wood chips, straw, sugar cane, Lucerne) around the base (but not touching the trunk) conserves moisture, regulates soil temperature, and adds nutrients as it decomposes.
-
Pruning
-
Lightly trim any damaged, crossing, or diseased branches. Major structural pruning is best done in late winter or early spring before vigorous new growth begins. Any lateral branches that grow “out of character” to the rest of the tree should be pruned so that all lateral branches are balanced and symmetrical.
-
Avoid heavy pruning on newly planted trees, as they need their foliage to produce energy for root establishment.
-
-
Pest & Disease Management
-
Monitor leaves and trunk for signs of pests (e.g., scales, aphids) or fungal issues.
-
Use horticultural oils, insecticidal soaps, or appropriate fungicides as needed, following label instructions. We are always happy to help, email us for more information.

-
Check Staking & Ties
-
Inspect stakes and ties every few months to ensure they are not rubbing or constraining the trunk’s growth.
-
Remove stakes as soon as the tree is stable on its own.
